Overview of Yapstone Risks

In August 2019 VRBO/Homeaway ended their relationship with their credit card payment processor (a company named Yapstone) and moved credit card processing to a new in-house system.

  • The new in-house system only processes credit cards reservations made after August 2019

  • For reservations made during or prior to August 2019, Yapstone will continuing to collect any remaining payments where they collected the initial payment

There are short term risks associated with credit card payments collected by Yapstone via the VRBO/Homeaway payment system that I want to make you aware of:

  • VRBO/Homeaway represented to vast majority of Yapstone's business, has since laid off hundreds of employees, and is now rumored to be in financial trouble

  • Yapstone switched policy to holding guest payments until their check-in date to help manage cash flow through a difficult financial time for their company - note that Yapstone previously passed payments to owners immediately after guests made payments like all other payment processors

  • If Yapstone were to enter bankruptcy "after you make this payment but prior to your check-in date" you would have to file a dispute with your credit card company to recover your payment, and then you would need to re-submit it to me via another payment method in order for your reservation to be paid in full by check-in.  Given this risk I strongly advise against making the current payment due via the VRBO/HomeAway system.

To offer guests a risk-free payment system I am accepting checks with a 3% discount (Yapstone charges me 3% for credit card payments) and I can also provide a credit card invoice from my owner direct credit card processor which passes money to me immediately after a guest makes a payment (like all other credit card processors).

I realize this may sound like some kind of fraud scam so here are a few ways to gain comfort and verify that what I am saying is true, and that I am the owner of the home you rented:

  • Contact VRBO/Homeaway directly to discuss the Yapstone situation.  Their customer service number is (877) 202-4291 which you can verify by logging into your VRBO/Homeaway account.

  • Call me to discuss.  You can find my phone number by clicking on your reservation in your VRBO/Homeaway account (I would include it here but prefer not to publish my phone number on the Internet to minimize my chances of getting even more spam phone calls!)

  • Google "Homeaway" and "Yapstone" and scroll down the results and click on a few that relate to what I'm saying
